I am on the 7 day plan, because I think the flex plan would be my demise. If given the chance to choose other foods that are this good, I may stray. So it is better that I stick with what is best for me and is still on an even keel with my tastes. When my husband cooked it always tasted good, but my cholesterol was through the roof. Now my cholesterol is under control and one of my heart medications is no longer needed. I have lost 21 pounds and still losing. I will be in better shape in one month, than I have been since I was 30.
I DID follow the NS Uniquely Yours plan nearly to the letter and boy did it pay off. Turbo week I lost 7 pounds. I did not feel great or energetic but I gutted it out without a single cheat! Huge victory for my undisciplined self. I did not consume every single veggie allotted but I came close. Four cups of veggies a day is a lot. I really craved some comfort food and some of the meals in the Turbo kit I will never order again. The shakes and Nutricrush bars were fine. The meal portions were pretty shocking but surprisingly satisfying with all the protein inserted into the meals and detox from my usual sugar rollercoaster. I did experience some headaches probably from the reduction in sugar similar to a caffeine withdrawal. One indulgence I cannot live without is my one strong morning coffee and creamer, so I guess I did cheat with 1 Tbs. (30cal) sweetened full fat creamer daily.
The most controversial part of this diet is the severe fat restriction. The American Heart Association recommends a diet with 25% to 35% of your calories from fat. The Pritikin Principle requires you consume less than 10% of your calories from fat. Besides providing taste to your diet, dietary fat has other functions, and 10% may be too low to meet your needs. There has been a considerable amount of research showing the health benefits of omega-3 fats, including protecting your heart. The American Heart Association now recommends that people without coronary heart disease eat a variety of omega-3 fat-containing fish at least twice a week and that those with coronary heart disease consume one gram of omega-3 fats per day. Dietary fat is also needed to transport the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K. Without fat to transport them, they will not be able to serve their functions in your body.
I just completed my first two weeks and I’ve lost 9LBS the first week and another 4LBS in week two for a total of 13LBS. I have been very pleased with the food (personalized my plan selections) and the only negative was that I was very gassy and some pretty painful stomach pains for a couple days during my second week. I did experience constipation for the first week and very well could have made a mistake by eating more meals with higher fiber content to combat this which may have created the stomach pain. I did take GasX which has solved the problem. My advice would be to stay strong, adhere to the plan and drink 8 to 10 16oz bottles of water per day. The results thus far have been amazing and I am well on my way to achieving my goals by the summer. VERY EXITED!
As you can see, the Nutrisystem cost varies depending on which plan you prefer and whether or not you’re a man or woman. All in all, this food is not pricey when compared to other diets with prepackages meals, shakes and snacks. However, you might get tired of eating the same processed foods over and over again. On the plus side, with all of the Nutrisystem plans, you can get free shipping and handling. There is also an auto-delivery option that is encouraged.
it really is non-edible. My brother and I both bought it and threw it out. I think it was the nastiest thing I’ve ever tried–I’d rather not eat a thing than eat that. No wonder people lose weight. Wonder if their spokespeople get better food than ordinary people do. Or, they wouldn’t promote it as being good.

A lot of energy is spent hyping its Turbo10 feature, which is supposed to be followed during the first week of any plan to jump-start weight loss. Regardless of which plan you choose, the first week will consist of the Turbo10 Takeoff kit, which includes foods and meals that are designed to help you start dropping pounds quickly.
I spent the next couple of weeks feeling depressed and embarrassed, which I masked by eating and drinking even more. It was the middle of winter, and I was laying on the couch late one night when a Nutrisystem commercial came on TV. Dan Marino, the legendary Miami Dolphins Quarterback, was talking about how he had lost more than 20 pounds on Nutrisystem, and for some reason, his words stuck with me (see the commercial below).
Nutrisystem aims to simplify weight loss. You don’t have to decide whether foods will fit your diet. You don’t have to count calories or carbs. For the most part, you don’t have to make sure you’re eating proper portion sizes. But you also can’t eat whatever you want to.
Regardless of the safety of a product, if you have any medical issues whatsoever or are taking medications you should consult your doctor to be sure it is a healthy option for your specific situation.
My weight loss stalled for a couple weeks. I was warned this could happen but I was still a little discouraged. I called a Nutrisystem counselor again. They are always so helpful. They suggested I change things up a bit. “Try swapping your dinners for lunch and lunches for dinners”. They said. The also advised me to eat more. “ Maybe add another 100 calories to your day” they suggested. I was also advised to make sure I drink enough water. So I did. My weight loss took off again and the pounds started dropping again. Who knew that more is sometimes less?
I signed up for Nutrisystem’s program over a year ago on a whim… They had a 40% off with 3-months automatic delivery deal. The worst mistake I’ve ever made. I was 127 lbs, hoping to lose 10 pounds or so and I thought this will save me time (no cooking required) and will help me achieve that goal in 3 months. A year later the food is still collecting dust in my pantry. 🙁 Quite frankly Nutrisystem achieved what I thought was impossible: they produced a variety of dishes that are equally offensive to all your senses at once: your sense of smell, sight and your taste.
“I have used Nutrisystem in the past and just finished two months. My goal was 25 pounds and I did meet me goal. I find the plan to be very easy to follow and have gotten to know which selections I like which really makes it much easier. I would recommend the plan to anyone. I can say that I never really find myself hungry and the regular meals, snacks and water consumption makes it relatively easy. In addition everyone that I have dealt with on the phone has been very helpful and pleasant to deal with.”
I read this review and all the comments, then I read it again before I decided on Nutrisystem for men. Take it from me, what the review says is all true. What it says is what I got and for me that’s about as honest as it gets. Thanks for writing it Dr Cook!
In 2017, Nutrisystem successfully tested the Lean 13 Program, a diet plan for even better results than the previous flagship of the company, the Turbo 10 program. Lean 13 delivers what the title says: up to 13 pounds of weight loss and 7 inches of “waist loss” within the first month of starting the program. Lean 13 is a dietitian approved mix of high protein and low carbohydrate foods that can help you to retain muscle mass while reducing your fat intake. Nutrisystem says they has experimented behind the scenes with different combinations of meals to optimize this plan. All of the meal choices within Lean 13 correspond with the top findings in the experiments, claims the company. On Lean 13, Nutrisystem claims that you get meals and snacks to ensure that you never go hungry. NutriCrush® bars and TurboShakes™ are meant to support your digestive health with good probiotic bacteria, reduce belly bloat, and create an even more effective, tasty weight loss program. Aside from the special snacks and meals, you also get comprehensive support from weight loss coaches, certified diabetes educators and registered dietitians seven days a week.
Thanks for the comment, Heather…It definitely works when you follow the program correctly. $300 is a commitment, so just make sure you’re ready to follow through and stick with the program for at least a month or two. Best of luck if you decide to try it!
I’ve been on NS now for 3 weeks. The food is absolutely TERRIBLE! I had bad gas for the first week. That went away the second week. Now the third week I’ve got bad stomach cramps every time I eat the food that comes in the tins. I think they use Fiber as the filler/thickener for all their foods. When I signed up, there was some small sneaky wording about “auto-renew”, meaning after one month of food, they will automatically ship you another month’s worth. I luckily found this out and had to call to cancel the ‘autorenew’. Unfortunately, they charged me another $57.00 to cancel the autorenew. I would NOT recommend this diet food to anyone. Way too expensive, food is bad, causes bad gas and cramps and too much fine print.
A benefit of the Nutrisystem diet plan is that it includes a wide range of different foods, which helps prevent boredom and ensures that customers have access to meals and snacks that they actually like. Breakfasts include options such as oatmeal, cereal, muffins and scrambled eggs, while lunch and dinner options include pasta, lean meats, soup and rice. Customers can also choose snacks and desserts that can include pudding, shakes, dessert bars and soy chips. Most types of fruits and vegetables are acceptable on the program, too.
This is one of several diet plans offered by Nutrisystem, and it involves portion control, balanced nutrition, and frequent meals. This system is supposed to accelerate your weight-loss results. Here is what you can expect to eat on Lean 13:
Nutrisystem for Women claims to give women the flexibility to discipline their own eating habits and provide the family with healthy eating options as well. The women’s program also includes free FedEx system, front door delivery of meals and consultations from professional nutritionists.
Hi Camilla, I’m so glad you’re doing well on the diet and the gas problem was short-lived for you. The way to real success with this program comes after you complete it and return to normal meals: You need to keep eating healthily and in small portions and never return to eating junk food or you’ll just put all the weight back that you lost. You can do it, I’m sure!
My husband and I both started this diet, he needs to lose 40 pounds I need to lose 100! Our first week he lost pounds and I lost 15.5 all just in the first week. If you add spices to the food it makes good food GREAT. When hungry eat salad is what I tell my husband. He gets more snacks than I do but this to me is a very easy diet to follow. We planted a garden and makes it more fun to grow your own salads! I think the trick is once you lose your weight to keep it off. But I hope we get to that problem! I talked my husband into doing the diet with me and to tell you the truth, I think it helps him to understand the struggle of sitting next to someone eating foods that you can’t have when only one person is on a diet. No matter what you do in life …..it’s easier with two.
So far, my favorite is the mushroom risotto, the chicken with dumplings, and the chili with beans, the flame broiled beef patty, the barbecue sauce pork wrap, the chocolate chocolate chip pudding, the chocolate crunch bar, the chocolate chip cookie, the creamy tomato sauce, the blueberry pancakes and the blueberry muffins. I could go on and on about the rest of Nutrisystem’s dishes but I’m making myself hungry 😉 I enjoy eating all of Nutrisystem’s foods. I do not think I have found a food that I did not like yet.
Losing weight is not rocket science, as Nutrisystem would have you believe. You don’t need them to cook your meals weeks or months prior. Just start adding healthy, fesh foods to your regular diet and ween yourself off of heavy foods that you’ll find at restaurants. This way your body is getting what it really wants and needs, and you aren’t relying on a corporation to provide 100% of your food.
The Flex Meals and eating guides are also very helpful when you have those lunches or dinners that you cannot avoid going to. I also must admit that I allow myself one cheat meal a week as well. Maybe if I was really strict, then I would have lost more weight. 11lbs in a month still makes me happy. I still have 30lbs to go to hit my goal weight, but I’m going strong and confident that I can do it because the plan’s flexibility makes is easy to stick to.
I just started Nutrisystem, largely based on this review. I’ve lost and gained the same 100 lb about four times prior to this. I had the most luck with Atkins but I can’t sustain that for the long term. A lot of people talk about the price, but I don’t know how many of them add up the cost of what they are currently eating. Just doing some basic averages, and Nutrisystem even with adding veggies, cheese, and eggs (my protein choice), will be HALF what I’m used to spending.
Glad to hear you had success with Nutrisystem and would wholeheartedly agree with you on the portion sizing. I look at what I eat now vs. two years ago and it’s crazy. I got that from them and the changed diet was combo between them and us just changing our habits.

Want to chime in here. I’ve been 3 weeks into my first month on Nutrisystem and so far the food has been OK. Not as bad as some have been saying, but certainly not great. I find I have no problem eating the meals and snacks and don’t feel hungry at all. I was worried starting this cause I was 236 pounds and 5,7 tall so I really need to lose a lot. Not just for my health but also my self respect cause even friends are calling me some pretty hurtful things when they think I can’t hear. But you know what, I’m going to do this. So far I’m down to 221 already and I’m in fighting mood! I’m staying on this for as long as it takes but I’m aiming to get down to 160 first so I can start working out hard in the gym without worrying I’m going to keel over with a coronary! I’m already doing some very light exercise which I think is helping some and I feel like I have a spring in my step for the fist time in years. Oh, I’m age 58 if anyone’s counting. Wish me luck!

Many years ago, I read a great line that goes: “You can never fail if you never quit,” which pretty much sums up most things in life, dieting included! I like to keep it written on a card I keep in my wallet to remind me to keep on keeping on at whatever I’m doing because in the end I’ll succeed.
