Thanks so much for some clear points on the NS plan. I was pretty much sold but there was a little ‘itch’ in the back of my mind because all I could find were glowing ‘sales pitch’ reviews regarding NS. However you helped me tremendously to see what to expect and not expect from the plan. I read a few reviews on another site saying that users felt always hungry with the portion sizes, however I now feel that they most likelye didn’t take the time or advice of NS to supplement their meals with fresh greens, veggies, and fruit… Thank you again for your great article!
I’m happier with the lunch choices though. All of the soups are great, but I really love the Chicken Salad. I also think that the breakfast choices and dessert options are really helping me to stick to the diet.
I don’t exercise as often as I used to, but am still losing weight. I have lost 11 pounds in the last month for a grand total of 43 pounds lost. This month I am expecting to lose about 8, but it varies on how much I exercise. I use the diary online to help me see how much progress I have made, and the trackers show me exactly where I need to work to lose more. With all the options available, this is the easiest diet to follow that I have ever been on.
Limited calories. The calorie count is designed to help you lose a pound or two each week on this diet program. The exception is the “Lean 13” plan on which women can lose up to 13 pounds and 7 inches in the first month while men can expect to lose 15 pounds and 7 inches..
NOTE: This is a blog about two guys attempting to lose weight over a six-week period. Jimmy Orr is trying Nutrisystem. Tony Pierce is freelancing. They began on Jan. 10. I found myself saying ‘Hello children’ numerous times in the voice of “South Park’s” Chef; as I pulled out a Nutrisystem Salisbury steak TV dinner on Thursday night. Chef, as voiced by the late Isaac Hayes, frequently had Salisbury steak on the school lunch menu and would offer to serve it up to the South Park kids right before some disaster would inevitably strike.
I have been on the program for over 2 years and so far lost 75 lbs. I still have more to go but I must say on one of my dinners I was shortchanged on the turkey medallions not to mention they were extremely hard. This was the first and only time since I was on the program I had a problem and they immediately gave me a credit and one other time sent me the wrong lunch bar and promptly sent what I wanted. I think their program is great and not out to extort money. I think you are out to extort money.
Starting day 5 on fast five plan. Day 4 was terrible with constant stomach pain, not gas pain. The pain was present most of the day and through the night and I’m still uncomfortable this morning. Did not vary from the plan at all so far. I’m 68, 5′-9″, 171 lbs. Accumulate fat from chest to pelvis, man boobs, muffin top. Pre N.S. diet was fairly healthy, no packaged meals, mostly homemade, just guilty of overeating and eating late. Now I’m concerned about this stomach pain and wondering if I should continue with this diet.
I first signed up for Nutrisystem several years ago and had awesome results using their program. In fact, I lost about 30 pounds the first time I tried it (read the full story below), and since then I’ve been able to maintain my weight loss with a combination of healthy eating and exercise.
“Nutrisystem is a low-calorie weight-loss program that offers balanced, easy-to-prepare meals, and controls calories by making the meal portions small,” explains dietitian Molly Kimball, RD, a sports and lifestyle nutritionist and program coordinator at the Ochsner Health System’s Elmwood Fitness Center in New Orleans.
Hi Cindy – Thanks for visiting, and happy to hear the pricing info helped! I think 5 to 10 pounds is totally doable, especially if you commit to the full 2 months! Remember, Nutrisystem does offer counselors to help keep you on track, and as long as you stick to the program, you should see a significant amount of weight loss during that time period! It’s important to have steps in place once you’re done using Nutrisystem, so I like to encourage people to have a plan in place once they’ve achieved their weight loss goals, and are ready to transition off the program. That has definitely been a key to success for me over the years. In any case, best of luck – let us know how it goes!
The plan is not for pregnant women, people with chronic kidney disease, or anyone with certain allergies or diet needs. It’s not for children under age 14, though Nutrisystem offers programs for teens ages 14 to 17.
So far I’m very pleased with the plan and considering ordering it to take to the ski hill with me in the winter where staff accommodation rooms mean a shared fridge and stove which can be difficult to get access and space in. This would be so nice to keep in a closet! Just need my veggies and fruits in a fridge.
One significant benefit to Nutrisystem is that it is easy to follow. Many people have a hard time sticking to other diets because there are calories to count, carbs to count, and points to track. Then there is often guesswork with the values of certain foods or portions.
Grab and Go. They offer “grab and go” snacks to keep you healthy even when you’re on the run. These options include granola bars, mixed nuts, dried fruit, pretzels, and more to take with you when you don’t have time to sit down to eat a real meal. The frozen foods are easy to transport to work. You can bring them along for your lunch break to eat as long as you have an office that offers a microwave in the lunchroom.
The foof for me was OK. The non frozen dinners were not very good. I am totally with you Pam on the deducting money!!! They were very smug about and insisted they did nothing wrong! It is a “process” to get your money back!!
You do need to buy some fresh vegetables on fruit when using the Nutrisystem diet, but even with that, the plan still is still an affordable way to reach your weight loss goals when you compare it your typical food costs.
Outside of food, the diet also includes counseling, which some say makes the difference. For me, the counseling was helpful. My friendly counselor, Jamie, called me every week to check on me and candidly answered my questions.
If you want to add more fruits and vegetables to the foods that are delivered the company just launched the NutriSystem Select program where fresh frozen foods are delivered to your house. This program expands the food choices and also improves the overall health profile of the food. We would observe that going with the Select option is the best one for long term health and long term weight loss success.
I am a 47 year old female. I have gained 50 lbs since turning 40! I have tried dieting, but wind up sick to death of grilled chicken and salad after a month! Counting calories stinks. I’ve been on nutrisysyem for 3 weeks. I go to jazzercize 3 times a week. I do no other exercise. I have lost 7 pounds. I love all the frozen meals. Some of the other is Yuck. I adjusted my order next time. It is so convenient. I eat almonds for my snack in the morning. I eat string cheese in the afternoon. I take fresh broccoli in my lunch, and I eat a HUGE salad with dinner. I am only slightly hungry when I go to bed at night, but Never during the day. I do not agree with people saying it doesn’t teach you how to get off of it. I have learned so much about portion control. I will never eat fried foods again. I love the deserts. Some complaine they are small. I’d rather have something than nothing because I am going to eat something sweet! I heard someone say the chocolate was an inch long. I don’t know what this person was eating, but nothing I got was that small. The ice cream bars are normal size, and Yum! I will stay on this diet until I’ve lost this 50 lbs! Oh I’m writing a lot down, including calories And measurements of everything, do when I’m off it, I can continue same ideA on my own! 🙂
My Dad lost 50lbs, my mom lost 35lbs, my brother lost 40lbs but gained muscle as well with doing his job along with the diet (hanging gutters), and I lost 15lbs (fyi, this brought me to 115lbs, i wasn’t fat before just couldn’t lose a few pounds on my own)
If you order the food, Nutrisystem takes care of the rest. You just eat what they tell you to eat when they tell you to eat it. All of the nutrition facts are posted on the food labels, so you know what you’re getting. This system works similarly to other diets such as Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, and South Beach Diet.
After you’ve picked one of the plans listed above, you will receive a full month’s worth of food right to your doorstep. I loved the convenience that Nutrisystem provided while on the diet – it really doesn’t get much easier – as long as you follow their plan, you’re pretty much guaranteed to lose weight.
I had a similar experience. After just 1 week on the plan I was unable to move. I had incredible pain on the left side of my abdomen. For almost a month I could not touch or lay on my left side–stomach so sore and very bloated. I am still not fully recovered. I have researched the ingredients in Nutrisystem’s food and it would appear that Resistant Maltodextrin is the cause of my pain.

Anyway. I would never go so far as to tell folks not to try any diet, cause what works for some don’t work for others so you are to try and ram your opinions down people’s throats like that. Fair play to the author for even publishing your whiny complaint!
One of the most frequently asked questions for the Nutrisystem program is about eating out at a restaurant. The answer to that is kind of complicated. Yes, you can eat out as long as you make a very healthy choice that is also a reasonable portion size. The problem with restaurants is that usually the portions are huge, and the chef in the back is probably cooking with excess amounts of oil or butter to make it taste as decadent as possible. You will want to ask for the items you order to be steamed, boiled, or prepared without any additional oil or butter. Then, cut the portion in half to take half of it home for a later meal. You may also want to share a meal with your spouse or a friend if you are out for lunch or dinner.
The primary advantage to this diet is that you will lose weight if you eat what you are given. Portion-and-calorie-controlled meals are great tools for long-term weight loss and maintenance. They take away the guesswork of how many calories you consume, they can be nutritionally balanced, they are quick and easy to prepare, and they teach you about healthy portion sizes.
When you purchase the first month of meals via the official website, there is usually the offer of a money-off deal or free shipping which sounds great. This automatically signs you up for “Auto-Delivery” which means you’ll get subsequent packages of food shipped to your home without you needing to do anything.
If you have trouble coming up with new menu items, or don’t know what a balanced meal is supposed to look like, then signing up for Nutrisiystem for a month is a good idea. This way you can see the sort of meals you can make, the portion sizes, and the different food combinations that work for you.
Nutrisystem still may be a bargain compared to competitor Jenny Craig. Unless you catch them during a promotion, Jenny Craig charges a registration fee on top of its meals, which generally runs at least $100 a week.
Nutrisystem is expensive and not realistic for someone with a family (you would be spending approx. $300 a month just on your food PLUS your grocery shopping for your family). If finanaces aren’t a problem, think about how many times a month you go out to eat because you can no longer dine out on this program.
