Like most guys I know, I love to eat! I was always afraid of going on a hard core diet plan because I did not want to give up great tasting foods. With the Nutrisystem plan I have not had to give up any of my usual great tasting foods. Hats off to Nutrisystem for figuring out how to get great tasting food in a small package that is so easy to prepare – just stick it in the microwave and you’re eating in 5 minutes.
Thank you for the sensible critique and cost info. Me and my neighbor were just preparing to do some research on how much this diet cost, and I’m glad I found your breakdown. We’re hoping to lose some serious weight!
Let’s see what actual independent research—not funded by Nutrisystem or similar weight-loss industry-related programs—has to say about that claim and also, about the science behind the Nutrisystem way of eating: frequent, small meals daily.
“I didn’t know what turbo was or that there are restrictions or how this diet works. I’m glad I reached out to find a lot of helpful information without me even asking. Seems like they want you to succeed and are encouraging. I also had a problem with my order and ended up getting meat foods which I couldn’t eat. I was really upset and I’m glad the issue was resolved within the same phone call. Truly stellar people working at Nutrisystem.”
One of the biggest concerns I hear from others about the Nutrisystem plan is the cost. Usually the first thing I hear them say is “Nutrisystem is so expensive”. Honestly, I said the same thing in the beginning, then I did the math. I tell them, “Have you ever added up what you spend on groceries each month?” I don’t know about you, but most of the groceries I bought each month either went to waste or waist. With Nutrisystem it goes to neither.
I have recently finished the NS Jumpstart 5 day weight loss kit at WalMart. The food was good but what is with all the chocolate items, dipped, coated, slathered in sickenly sweet chocolate. Even the free shakes I received were chocolate. I’ve tossed a lot of items because I just cannot eat the chocolate stuff. I’ve emailed NS asking about this obsession with chocolate items and don’t get a response. I’m considering going on the program but even the Vegetarian option has numerous chocolate items.
Hey Nellie, good question. As long as you keep eating small portions, keep your daily calorie count to the same as while you’re on the diet and do not return to old bad eating habits (like eating junk food or foods high in sugar, drinking soda etc) you should not gain weight.
Dieters just starting on the Nutrisystem program select breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert and snack items for 28 days at a time, either online or over the phone. The meals are all delivered at once to the dieter’s home, along with instructions for following your personalized eating plan. None of the items require refrigeration, and most are ready-to-eat or microwavable, though some need you to add hot water or to do some stove-top preparation. To supplement the Nutrisystem meals, you’re also provided with instructions for how much vegetables, fruits, lean protein and low- or no-fat dairy products you’ll need from the grocery store. Nutrisystem followers are also encouraged to exercise for 30 minutes daily.
But because it’s important for you to learn—and practice—healthy eating habits so you can sustain your weight loss for life, in addition to your Nutrisystem foods, you’ll also incorporate fresh grocery foods into your diet. We’ve separated these foods into five simple categories, which will make it easy for you to complete a well-rounded diet, learn healthy habits, and add some variety to your plan!
Hi June, congrats on your success! I agree, 90% of successful weight loss is really down to a person’s mindset. And getting into the right frame of mind comes from re-learning how to eat the right way so the body doesn’t gain weight. Cutting out sugar-laden foods/drinks and eating smaller portions more often is proved to work again and again for most dieters. Once the mind has learned the right way to eat, the body does what it’s told!
I was 5’6 and 137 lbs. I wanted to take off 10-15 stubborn lbs. I am on day 14 with Nutrisystem and have lost 6 of those. No strenuous exercise except that I am very mobile while chasing a 2 year old all day. You have to drink the water and eat what it tells you to eat. I have really liked most of the food thus far. It is the first “diet” I’ve been on that I’m not hungry. Hope this helps someone.
Hey Cindy, good to hear you and your husband are doing great with the weight coming off, but not so good to hear you have the gas problem that some folks get. Is your husband getting the same problem? I hear of it happening when folks try Nutrisystem instead of eating healthy home cooked meals, so its likely down to the big adjustment the body needs to make with a very different menu it’s not used to. You’re accustomed to healthy meals that I assume you cook with all fresh ingredients and now your eating processed foods–it’s a big change in diet that can be problematic for some folks. If the problem persists I’d recommend you talk to customer support and even your doctor if the pain is bad.
That’s right: In an era when the market value of Google (GOOG ) outstrips that of Gannett (GCI ), Washington Post Co. (WPO ), and New York Times Co. (NYT ) combined, traditional media are still a powerful marketing tool. This year over 80% of NutriSystem’s $35 million advertising budget will be spent on TV, radio, and print, even as an equal-size portion of its food orders comes in over the Web. “The Internet can make you a low-cost distributor,” says Hagan. “But to create the urgency to order now, you need the imagery of TV and print.”
Nutrisystem works for me. At times, I’m fully aware my increased energy and motivation. Losing the desire to junk snack at night is a huge improvement. It is worth the money to spend a few months eating NS to lose weight and change my eating habits.
4. Losing weight is not just about calories. Just read any of the latest articles on news sites and the top diet experts now tell you not all calories are equal. Its the SUGAR and HFCS you need to eliminate from your diet, Then artificial additives, pesticides (which you’ll find in most non-organic store food), phyto-estrogens (non-organic dairy, meat, grains) high GI carbs (bread, pasta, cookies, cakes, candy etc)… the list goes on. The food industry is a scary place.
