Planning on finishing up the second month and then on the 3rd month working in more home cooked meals and tracking to stay at the same calorie level. Then will switch over to the auto ship of Turbo shakes for my 4th month.
Thanks Ashley and best wishes as you start. I know what that’s like. We’re usually pretty busy and it can be easy to slip into getting something out/having something unhealthy. I really liked how NutriSystem made it easy to deal with those times and still stick to the plan.
The research does support the health benefits of this diet, and you will lose weight if you stick with the plan. The web site provides recipes and detailed information on nutrition, exercise, and stress management.
After being on Nutrisystem for 6 months, I decided to change my plan to the “weekends on my own” plan, also known as “weekends off”. Does Nutrisystem weekends off work? Yes, it does work. With this plan, I picked 20 days of meals instead of 28 which left me to defend for myself two days a week. To transition off of Nutrisystem, I needed to learn to apply my own foods to my diet that are equivalent to Nutrisystem meals.
They offer a 30 day guarantee, and you can just stop. They have been criticized in the past for food that does not taste good or tastes bland, and they seem to be working to address this issue. As we get more feedback we will update this post. One thing to point out is that they are selling $700 million worth of their meals each year, which means there are a lot of people doing this. They offer a pretty compelling value proposition- you don’t spend much more than you already would and it is convenient.
Nutrisystem has helped me so much with the eating part of that. Because the food is already made and correctly portioned, I don’t worry about eating too much. The food tastes really great, and never once have I felt like I needed to eat something else after I have finished one of their entrées. I especially love the pasta dinner dishes. I feel like I can now eat pasta without feeling guilty; which is a nice change. Plus, I know that spending the money on the plan is helping me stick to it because I don’t want the money to go to waste. That really has helped me a lot.
Hi Lynn – I replied to Ray with a couple of other options (BistroMD and Diet-to-Go)…I would recommend checking out those reviews if you think they may be something that would work for you and your husband. You won’t need much freezer space with Nutrisystem unless you go with their upper-tier plans, and even then I would say most normal-sized refrigerators can accommodate the shipment. You will need to purchase some additional fruits and vegetables, but I think you can get the cost below $100 if you stick with things like bagged salads, etc. There are definitely some ways to keep the costs down though. You will definitely want to incorporate fresh produce, though, as I think you would get tired of only eating their pre-made meals, and you will want to mix in a salad or something on most days just to get the health benefits from the fresh produce if nothing else. Hope that helps!
Snacks – One of the main tenets of the diet plan is consuming small, frequent meals around the day. This is supposed to keep your metabolism charged and firing on all pistons. Between meals, then, you can enjoy an occasional snack. Take your pick from a broad array of snacks, including premade shakes that taste great and include the right amounts of vitamins, minerals and nutrients. Popular snacks include white cheddar popcorn, milk chocolate flavored pretzels, chocolate cupcakes and ice cream sandwiches. Be sure to follow the appropriate schedule, and take care not to accidentally eat too many snacks, or your daily calorie intake may be too high to allow you to lose weight effectively.
The primary advantage to this diet is that you will lose weight if you eat what you are given. Portion-and-calorie-controlled meals are great tools for long-term weight loss and maintenance. They take away the guesswork of how many calories you consume, they can be nutritionally balanced, they are quick and easy to prepare, and they teach you about healthy portion sizes.
With that in mind, let’s take a look at exactly what you can expect when you sign up for Nutrisystem, how much it costs, and the food you’ll be eating, so you can decide if it’s the right program for you.
Though Nutrisystem can work for some people, it’s best for short-term weight loss, according to the Everydiet website. Portion control on its own will help with initial weight loss, but lifestyle changes that include exercise are necessary for more long-term weight loss, as well as weight maintenance. The cost another consideration. Nutrisystem offers several weight loss plans that range in price. Plans for diabetics, vegetarians and seniors can cost a bit more. Customers should also keep in mind that while they get to choose their foods, the meals and snacks are frozen so they won’t taste as fresh as homemade foods.
A few weeks later, I had a birthday and, well, you know how that goes. I ate cake but just a small piece. I also had to attend some family cookouts and a nephew’s wedding. It was somewhat of a struggle, but again, I have learned to eat small portions. The biggest struggle was everyone trying to get me to eat more. People think that since you lost a few pounds, you can go back to eating the way you used too. It doesn’t work that way. It’s a lifestyle change and you have to stay strong. Though I wished I could have had seconds, I didn’t and walked away feeling like Wonder Woman.
I’ve used Nutrisystem twice. The first time for 4 months I lost about 60 pounds (I think, it’s been a while). Then, continuing on my own using the practice of portion control learned from NS and daily exercise I lost another 40 pounds. Credits go to NS for the food program and online support and the behavior modifications. A couple of years later I needed to lose some more weight but couldn’t afford the great program I was on before. Do I ordered s more basic program with no frozen food. This time I wasn’t as successful and the packaged and unfrozen foods all reminded me of Hormel and MRE foods. I canceled and my weight continued to creep up. I’m still 60 pounds lighter than I was 5 years ago but now I feel like a pig and need to lose 40 pounds.
You begin this diet by selecting the program that best meets your needs: Women’s, Men’s, Silver for Women, Silver for Men, Type 2 Diabetes, or Vegetarian. You can then either let NutriSystem select your meals or you can choose for yourself. Standard programs, such as Women’s or Men’s, offer over 300 different meals to choose from. But subscribers to the other programs have a more limited selection. For example, the vegetarian program lets you choose from about 60 entrees and desserts.
If you work out vigorously or have more than 100 pounds to lose, contact our weight loss counselors and dietitians , as you may require additional calories from SmartCarbs and PowerFuels to achieve optimal weight loss results.
I agree the dry food isn’t all that good and I’ve have off the charts pain in my abdomen after eating it. (Has anyone else had this problem?) I’ve had no problems with the frozen food. It tastes better, too. Good luck on your weight loss journey.
There are over 150 menu items to choose from when you pick your plan. There is a lot of variety there, so you won’t get bored eating the same foods over and over again. You can customize the plan by selecting each individual meal or snack, or they have sample “favorite” menus. This way you don’t have to make the choices yourself if you would rather handle it in that manner.
I was on this diet along with my mom, my dad, and later my brother before he moved out. All 4 of us lost weight on it. We followed the meal plans for daily intake and ate out every saturday night just making better decisions then we did before. This gave us a little taste of the “good fatty foods” so that we didn’t get burnt out on the nutrisystem.
Forget counting calories, or even worrying about the glycemic index. Dieters who buy the company’s prepared foods automatically receive correct portions in the form of low-G.I. foods. The plan adds up to one low-fat protein at each meal, three daily servings of vegetables, two to three fruits, two to three dairy products, two to four whole grains, and one to two servings of heart-healthy fats.
Anything where you cut your calories that much is going to have results. If you eat larger portions and unhealthy food now it will be drastic, but if you already healthy then no, it’s all about caloric intake. If you go from alot to a little you’re gonna loose weight. But be careful because the minute you stop watching those calories the weight will come back really fast.
The prepackaged diet meals of Nutrisystem are not family-friendly since it is good only for one individual and some people are more interested in well-cooked foods than the prepackaged meals of this dietary program.

Hi Pat Cantalupo, I totally agree. I was on it a few years ago and lost a lot of weight. People were amazed; and I was amazed. I could run up stairs in a flash! The problem was, as you stated, that once I got off the plan…I put it all back on and then some! I ate anything and all I wanted because…shoot, I had finished my diet.
The two diet options that are currently available are the Flex Plan and the Core Plan. The Flex Plan is an updated version of the POINTS Food System in which the goal is to stay within your recommended amount of points each day. The POINTS value for foods is calculated based on the food’s calories, fat, and fiber. Along with your weekly POINTS target you are also given a “Weekly Allowance” to use for indulging or special occasions.
The food is great, and the daily logs help me to really understand where my progress lies. My favorite meal is the three cheese pasta with chicken because I love cheese and this is so flavorful. I had pancakes for breakfast this morning from the mix, and they were so good.
The food is decent, not my home cooking, but it is still quite good. My favorite is the lasagna and the cinnamon buns. They are not only filling, but have a great taste, and takes care of the carb and sugar cravings I get. I have been using the Nutrisystem Silver plan now for over a month and have lost 31 pounds. Guess that just goes to show how unhealthy I was eating before. I don’t eat when I am tired or bored now, only when I am supposed to eat. And I am never hungry anymore; I’m always full and very satisfied. I’m trying to talk my husband into doing the plan too, he could stand to lose a few.
The Basic, at $275 a month, is good for first-timers; the Basic plan includes pre-selected, ready-to-go meals including burgers, pasta, and chocolate—customer favorites. Nutrisystem says their plan is “affordable guaranteed weight loss.”
I found the meal planner and daily diary easy to use, and the online diary and the tracker helps me to keep to my plan. I don’t have to count anything: no points or calories at all, which makes this the easiest diet I have ever been on. I don’t have to get embarrassed by going to meetings, because the meals come straight to my house every month. I love fruit, and the fact I can add it to my meals makes this a great way to get rid of the sugar shakes, where I really want the sugar and have to tell myself no.
In the first 28 days, all of us have lost at least five pounds. One of my sisters lost eight pounds, but that is because she started walking three days a week. We eat together and look at each other’s meals to see if we would like to try that entrée on a different day. Since we are doing it together it is working really well. None of us have jumped the weight loss ship. It feels good to have the accountability with my sisters, but I know that I couldn’t be doing this without Nutrisystem.
I have been on Nutrisystem for 6 months and I have lost just over 35 lbs. I also joined a local gym and have a personal trainer (which of course helps). My goal is to look as good as the day I graduated from High School when I go to my 50th class reunion in 2010. By the way, I already think I look better than the day I graduated! I know, wishful thinking, right? 😉 I just wish the meals were organic, but there are no organic weight loss plans out there.
I did really well for three weeks, lost weight, but not regular bowl movement..i woke up this morning very I’ll with vertigo…there is a lot of sodium in the food and after taking my blood pressure it was sky high…now i have to return a lousy week of food back to QVC and lose 10.00+ in shipping.
If you are looking for a diet that is the ultimate in convenience, Nutrisystem is that. You do not have to worry about portion sizes, planning, shopping, cooking or counting carbs, calories, and points. If you are a foodie who likes to try out the hottest restaurants and pair your dinner with a drink or two, you may need to find other options. In case your budget is pretty tight, a comparison of the cost versus your typical grocery bill will be to make a decision.
Hi Kris – congrats on signing up – while results will vary for everyone, I truly believe that you will lose a lot of weight if you follow the program – so stick with it, and let us know how it goes. Best of luck with your weight loss- we’re pulling for you :-).
Having to pay for a diet is another way of motivation. If you are paying for it, you’re most likely to stay with it. Oh, and here is another benefit of losing weight…. Extra large clothes are more expensive, too!
