But of course, most don’t. The average customer stays on the program just 10 weeks and loses about 2 pounds per week. About one-third come back within a year, many having regained the weight. “It’s a sad thing from the consumer’s standpoint,” Hagan says candidly. “But it makes a very attractive business model.”
A typical day might include a Nutrisystem granola-like bar for breakfast, one of the brand’s shakes for mid-morning snack, its chicken noodle soup for lunch, a serving of low-fat yogurt with fresh blueberries for mid-afternoon (you’re on your own with this one), a Nutrisystem lasagna for dinner, and one of the brand’s cookies for dessert or nighttime snack. This plan also includes access to the Nutrisystem app, which provides tools, tips, and tracking.
I finished 2 months on Nutrisystem last October after losing 14lbs I was thrilled as you can imagine. I wasn’t too keen on most of the food, but it wasn’t so bad, as some are saying. I just accepted it would be a tough thing to do, small meals and no candy lol. After I just thought I would go back to my old diet. But the first day, I couldn’t bear the sight of a huge pizza my family were tucking into. So I skipped it and ate a Schwanns lasagna I had in the freezer instead. It was then it struck me…I didn’t want to eat that old way anymore. I wanted to eat better and not put back the weight I lost like I always used to on other diets. All those itty bitty little meals I ate got me into a groove of eating less and even healthier. So it gave me much more than just the weight I lost. So far, I have stuck to that and its been more than 3 months and I’m actually another 4lbs lighter than when I stopped the diet! And no candy bars!
I just completed my first two weeks and I’ve lost 9LBS the first week and another 4LBS in week two for a total of 13LBS. I have been very pleased with the food (personalized my plan selections) and the only negative was that I was very gassy and some pretty painful stomach pains for a couple days during my second week. I did experience constipation for the first week and very well could have made a mistake by eating more meals with higher fiber content to combat this which may have created the stomach pain. I did take GasX which has solved the problem. My advice would be to stay strong, adhere to the plan and drink 8 to 10 16oz bottles of water per day. The results thus far have been amazing and I am well on my way to achieving my goals by the summer. VERY EXITED!
My husband was a metabolic nightmare, bp high, cholesterol high, blood sugar high so I order him the men’s diabetic plan and within 10 days everything had fallen into normal ranges. He was on Nutrisystem for 4 months and lost 40 pounds! Love the program and the support they give you and it really works if you follow the rules!!
There are no guarantees of how much weight you will lose. That will depend on your own body’s metabolic rate and your ability to work with the food you eat. If you do some additional exercise and make sure you drink plenty of plain water (not soda, not even diet soda) you will lose more weight than you would have done otherwise.

I grant that Nutrisystem food is not the healthiest because most of it is just like canned food and it does have a pretty high sodium content. However, with the current trend in our society of eating mostly unhealthy food and tons of sodium, ala restaurant and fast foods, and the huge portions they serve; and with the popularity of convenience foods such as hamburger helper and other processed “instant” home meals, it adds up to being as healthy if not more healthy than average.
Nutrisystem offers a 14-day free trial whereby the customer can cancel and receive a refund (less shipping costs). However, if cancelling after the 14 days AND before the second month is shipped, a $99.00 fee is charged to the customer.
With so many diets I was hungry just an hour or so after I ate. With the Silver plan, I am never hungry after I eat. Some days I don’t even eat the snacks because I am still full from my meals! The food is perfectly portioned so that I am always full, and it tastes so good. Each meal tastes home made, and is so easy to make. I paid more at the grocery store buying those diet meals than I pay for Nutrisystem each month. And I get more options so I never have to eat the same thing twice in a month.
My wife loves me being on the Nutrisystem diet too. She is very impressed with the progress I have made losing weight. She’s also happy that she does not have to cook special foods for me when she’s making dinner. She just makes dinner for the family and I eat my Nutrisystem meal.
“I subscribed to Right Size Smoothies for Monthly delivery. I really loved the stuff but had one huge complaint,” said Deborah of Fountain Inn, S.C., in a ConsumerAffairs review. “I subscribed at their website, the price was $10.00, not bad, but to my surprise it cost $20.00 shipping and handling. Total was $30.00.”
The portions are small. If you limit yourself to the quantity here, you will probably lose weight simply because you aren’t eating much, even with 2 of their snacks per day. The lunches and dinners will not fill you up.
I enjoyed having the burrito for lunch and the tuna salad was another favorite of mine. When you eat the tuna salad you get to put it on sandwich thin bread. I always eat a big green salad with some Nutrisystem approved dressing with my lunch.
However the biggest and most annoying thing that really got on my nerves was after paying for the first month, i came to the determination that it was too expensive to continue. When talking to someone at Nutrisystem about this I was told that even though I paid for my first month of food i would be charged another $99 to keep the food I already paid for, but could get a full refund and return the dry food. I’m sorry but that’s completely absured! Yes i got a discounted price (Which is the reason i would be charged) but that’s no excuse.
My current plan is to increase movement (with my trusty Fitbit egging me on) and decrease food intake. My husband’s lost about 60 pounds over the last 5 years by cutting out a lot of sugar and drastically reducing his portion size of regular foods. So now I do things like split a beer with him at night, or split a hot dog. It’s slow, but I’m seeing progress.
Ruined your health? Wow, that’s quite a dramatic statement to make. You had a bladder infection, you weren’t poisoned. LOL! You should have done your research before you ate “so many preservatives”. Know this, Nutrisystem has one of the most robust and advanced Research & Development labs across the food & drug category. I now this because my employer, an executive search firm, placed their SVP, R&D. You should have been drinking at least 64 oz of water BEFORE you even went on NS, if you are concerned about your health. Again, I shake my head at those of you who complain and blame right out of the gate. Good luck!
Hi Amanda – Thanks for visiting and reading my story. Sounds like you’re well on your way to some pretty great results! Wow – 50 pounds – that’s impressive! Hope it goes as well this time around. Pairing the leafy greens with the lunches and dinners helps make it seem more like a “meal,” so I’ve found that helpful as well. Best of luck!
Bloating is a sign and symptom of gas in the stomach or GI tract. Certain foods or health problems like constipation may cause it. Bacteria and certain foods like lactose can cause it. Learn the symptoms and causes of bloating to feel more healthy.
Sorry I missed reporting…I’ve made it into August. I’m doing the plan, I’m exercising, eating the food ect. But from8/1 til today nothing. Scale is not moving. I called in and got some instructions, but not too say, I’m feeling little down. I was down and went up 1 lb. Now its not moving. Yikes, this part is frustrating. Any ideas????
The Basic, at $275 a month, is good for first-timers; the Basic plan includes pre-selected, ready-to-go meals including burgers, pasta, and chocolate—customer favorites. Nutrisystem says their plan is “affordable guaranteed weight loss.”
I understand your frustration and dread over just starting out and thinking, “oh gosh, it is going to take so long to do this.” The way I had to think about it was this, if I don’t do anything, time will still go by and I will be right where I’m at now (like you have been for the past 10 years). I don’t think it will take you 2-3 yrs, I really don’t, but if it does, 2-3 yrs is going to go by regardless. You want to be at your goal weight then, not wishing you did something about it 2-3 yrs ago. As far as drinking goes, you can have A DRINK or two. No, you cannot pound them back, but I am not sure why you would want to anyway. Co-workers always ask me to go out for a drink and they order whatever and I order a diet coke. Finally someone said to me, “you don’t drink do you?” I said, “No not really. I don’t think it would mix well with my medication.” Nobody disrespects me for not drinking and I don’t get less invitations to go out. In fact, I don’t mind being a designated driver or keeping an eye on everyone to make sure they stay safe. You could blame it on medication if you want. For me, I really just don’t drink. Period. Never really have. If I have 2 drinks per year, that’s a lot. When I go out to eat or go to cookouts, etc. I order a meat and a vegetable with a diet soda. My favorite is 99’s 6oz petite sirloin with plain broccoli or carrots. No potato or anything. At a cookout it would be a burger or chicken with no bread, and a tossed salad or veggie. You CAN do it. You just have to order carefully. I wish you luck. You can do, I know you can.
“Nutrisystem Jumpstart 5 day box at Walmart is fantastic!” said Kathleen of Noble, OK. “This changed my It is fantastic and I have lost 45 pounds and have a goal to lose 16 more. I am 52 and past menopause and YES this works for me like nothing else and believe me I have tried every diet out there!”
Hi Jim – sorry, I missed this comment at the time you posted it. Nutrisystem does have a vegetarian plan, so you will probably want to check that out if you don’t eat much red meat. I would also recommend looking at BistroMD (https://www.thedietdynamo.com/bistro-md-reviews-healthy-meal-delivery-weight-loss/) and Diet-to-Go (https://www.thedietdynamo.com/best-diet-go-reviews-2017-chef-inspired-weight-loss/) as options for you. Diet-to-Go has some really good plans that sound like they could work for you. Both are going to be a bit more pricey than Nutrisystem, but sound like they could be a better fit.
I have read almost all of your comments and have found both the positives and the negatives to be informative. I have not tried NS before but I have decided to jump in the pond. I received my shipment today and I will start my plan tomorrow. I am excited and hope to send you a success e-mail in a few weeks!
As you will probably read in other Nutrisystem weight loss reviews, the taste is not the only thing great about Nutrisystem foods. Each meal is individually wrapped with cooking instructions which made it easy to toss in my purse and go to work. Some of the meals are easy enough to eat while in the car. One of my favorite things about Nutrisystem foods is not having to figure out what to eat each day and since the meals are all portion controlled, it takes the guess work out of having to measure or weigh what eat, because frankly, I’m too lazy to do that.
Breakfast. Some of the breakfast items in the Nutrisystem plan include apple cinnamon oatmeal, turkey sausage and egg muffins, buttermilk waffles, banana nut muffins, and homestyle pancakes. They even have chocolate frosted donuts and cinnamon rolls as breakfast options.
If you have ten pounds or more that you need to lose, they have a ready-made plan for you. If you have less than ten to drop, then you can customize a menu that will still help you meet your goals. Either way, you will be able to find a plan that fits your budget, matches your weight loss goals, and meets your dietary and nutritional needs.
Thank you for the sensible critique and cost info. Me and my neighbor were just preparing to do some research on how much this diet cost, and I’m glad I found your breakdown. We’re hoping to lose some serious weight!
I went on Nutrisystem Jan 27 2016. I was 305 lbs. Went back to Dr April 7 2016. Lost 50.4 I guess weight loss may depend on individual body chemistry. I I was eating Nutrisystem and drinking 4 bottles of water (sometimes more) 16.9 oz. I’m maintaining by eating regular food sometimes and Nutrisystem sometimes. This week I’m doing both…so far, all is well.
